Victims Commissioners meet with Foreign Minister, Micheál Martin on proposals regarding dealing with the past.

Commissioners for Victims and Survivors are in Dublin tomorrow for a meeting with Foreign Minister, Micheál Martin regarding their proposals for dealing with the past.

Last week the Commission submitted advice to Secretary of State, Owen Paterson, First Minister, Peter Robinson and deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness which outlined a series of action steps over the next year.

The Commission is urging the British and Irish Governments to act together by creating a talks process with political and civic leaders aimed at reaching agreement on new arrangements for dealing with the past.

The three Victims Commissioners want to see an agreement hammered out by next April and new mechanisms in place by the Autumn of 2011.

Commenting ahead of their Dublin visit, the Chair of the Commission, Patricia MacBride, said:
“Many victims and survivors believe that politicians are not really interested in addressing the past. The Irish Government has a crucial role to play. Acting in partnership, the two Governments need to get people round the table to design arrangements which can win the confidence of all sides."

The Commissioners are also due to meet with the leader of Fine Gael, Enda Kenny and Labour Party Leader, Eamon Gilmore at Leinster House.
