Commission Welcomes UK Government’s Plans to Repeal the Legacy Act

The Commission for Victims and Survivors welcomes the renewed pledge of the new Labour government during the Kings Speech today to commit to repeal and replace the Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act.

Alongside the Victims and Survivors Forum, the Commission have been opposed to this fundamentally flawed legislation and plans to repeal the conditional immunity scheme are welcome. However, it is imperative that victims and their families receive clarity and reassurance around other elements of the Act including inquests and civil litigation as quickly as possible.

The Commission is also pleased at renewed efforts by both the UK and Irish governments to address legacy matters together which recognises and responds to issues affecting victims and survivors living across these islands.

The Commission and the Victims and Survivors Forum look forward to engaging with the Secretary of State and his team in the days ahead.
