Commissioner for Victims and Survivors welcomes Western Balkans Delegation for shared learning on Memorialisation
The Commissioner for Victims and Survivors, Joe McVey and staff met with a delegation of civil society and cultural practitioners from the Western Balkans to discuss a range of issues in the areas of memorialisation and addressing the legacy of our troubled past from the perspective of victims and survivors.
Their visit formed part of a regional project Different Memories. Shared Futures: Towards Inclusive Memorialisation in the Western Balkans bringing together organisations working on remembrance, victims’ rights, education, and reconciliation in post-conflict societies across Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Kosovo, and Montenegro.
The group received a briefing on previous work that the Commission have conducted in the area of Acknowledgement with consideration to issues relating to commemoration and memorialisation and an outline of current legacy developments affecting victims and survivors of the Troubles/conflict.
The Commission welcome further engagement with this Group and other international stakeholders learning from their lived and practitioner-based experiences in shaping our ongoing policy development, research and engagement work in the months ahead.
