Commissioner for Victims and Survivors Joe McVey, accompanied by Commission staff, recently met with Health Minister Mike Nesbitt MLA to discuss the ongoing mental health and wellbeing needs of victims and survivors of the Troubles/conflict.

The meeting focused on the importance of ensuring long-term, sustainable funding for the services that many victims and survivors continue to rely on, as well as the need for trauma-informed care that recognises the enduring impact of the Troubles/conflict on individuals, families and communities.

Drawing on the Commission’s research and engagement with victims and survivors, the Commissioner highlighted the lasting and intergenerational effects of conflict-related trauma and the importance of maintaining accessible, community-based support services. The discussion also considered the significant funding pressures facing organisations delivering these essential services across Northern Ireland.

Ensuring the experiences and needs of victims and survivors continue to inform policy and decision-making remains central to the Commission’s statutory role. Through ongoing research, engagement and advice to government, the Commission will continue to advocate for services that recognise both the long-term and evolving needs of those affected by the Troubles/conflict.
