Our Forum members bring valuable expertise and lived experience in supporting victims and survivors. This section highlights the work they are leading within their own communities to raise awareness, influence change and support those affected across Northern Ireland.
In this edition, we feature Forum member Catherine Cook, who alongside her role on the Forum works with Foyle Women’s Information Network. Catherine plays a key role in organising the annual International Women’s Day event, helping to raise awareness of the issues facing women and girls and supporting community action.
We also include a contribution from Forum member David Crabbe, who works with Decorum, reflecting on a recent visit to their premises in Bangor by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, the Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP.
These contributions provide a snapshot of the breadth of work being carried out by Forum members and the experience and insight they bring to the Commission.
Shining the Light on Violence Against Women and Girls
To mark International Women’s Day 2026, Foyle Women’s Information Network (FWIN) hosted the “Shining the Light” Conference at The Guildhall, bringing together women from across the North West to raise awareness of violence against women and girls and the importance of building safer communities.
The event welcomed over 211 women, creating a powerful space for learning, discussion and solidarity. Speakers and workshops explored the different forms of violence and abuse that women and girls can experience, including emerging issues around online safety and digital harassment. Many attendees said they left the event feeling inspired, more informed, and more confident about speaking out in their communities.
The conference was delivered by FWIN in partnership with key organisations including the Northern Ireland Executive and the Ending Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy, reflecting a shared commitment to tackling violence and supporting women across Northern Ireland.
Established in 1994, FWIN works to increase the capacity, visibility and voice of women throughout the North West. The network supports women and women’s groups across both urban and rural communities, helping them to develop skills, participate in social and civic life, and address issues affecting their education, wellbeing, health and cultural development.
Events such as Shining the Light play an important role in raising awareness, empowering women and strengthening community action to end violence against women and girls.
Decorum – Secretary of State Visit
Decorum NI is a Northern Ireland registered charity which provides welfare, advocacy and social support to those who served under Operation BANNER (1969-2007) in Northern Ireland. This includes former members of the Armed Forces, Police, and Prison Service and their immediate families.
On 12th February 2026 the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, the Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP visited Decorum’s premises in Bangor, County Down.
This provided an opportunity for the Secretary of State to hear at first hand the diverse range of views on the current proposed Legacy Legislation and to learn of the experiences of Decorum members which included men and women who served (some of whom suffered injuries) and bereaved family members.
Events take place at Decorum throughout each month including personal development groups covering subjects such as creative writing, crochet, crafting, fishing, flower arranging, gardening (allotment), peer support, darts and music, as well as an on-going ‘drop-in’ facility. There are also regular ‘one-off’ social events and respite trips.
