Putting Victims and Survivors at the centre of mental health discussions
The Commissioner for Victims and Survivors and Commission staff met with Northern Ireland’s Mental Health Champion, Professor Siobhán O’Neill, to discuss key issues affecting the mental health and wellbeing of victims and survivors of the Troubles/conflict.
The meeting focused on the lasting impact of conflict-related trauma, the importance of ensuring people can access timely and appropriate treatment and support, and the vital role of services, including the Regional Trauma Network, in supporting recovery.
Discussions also explored the current challenges facing mental health services and the importance of ensuring the voices and experiences of victims and survivors continue to inform policy and service development.
During the quarter, Commission staff also attended the launch of Professor O’Neill’s reports “Mental Health in Northern Ireland: Current Services and Strategic Priorities” and “The Economic Case for a Mental Health Regional Crisis Intervention Service in Northern Ireland.” Together, the reports contribute to the growing evidence base around mental health in Northern Ireland, highlighting the importance of early intervention, trauma-informed approaches and continued investment in services.
The Commission welcomes opportunities to engage with research and evidence that supports improved outcomes for victims and survivors and helps shape future mental health policy and service provision.
