Reflecting on Experience Through Considering Lament: Psalms of Protest, Pain and Hope

The Commissioner for Victims and Survivors recently attended Considering Lament: Psalms of Protest, Pain and Hope, hosted by the Presbyterian Church in Ireland in Belfast.

The event brought together music, storytelling and reflection, using newly composed Psalms of lament shaped by the experiences of victims, survivors and first responders to the Troubles. Drawing on voices from across Northern Ireland, each Psalm reflected the depth of personal and community experience, offering space to acknowledge pain while also recognising hope.

Through contributions from regional focus groups and those with lived experience, the evening created an opportunity to listen, reflect and engage with the ongoing impact of conflict. It also highlighted the role that expression — whether through music, storytelling or shared reflection — can play in acknowledging trauma and supporting understanding.

For many victims and survivors, the impact of the Troubles is not confined to the past. Creating safe and meaningful spaces where experiences can be shared and heard remains important.

The Commission will continue to engage with partners across community, faith and wider society to ensure the voices and experiences of victims and survivors are recognised and reflected in how we understand the past and build for the future.
